Following the narrow adoption, by a single vote, of a resolution denouncing the 1968 agreement between France and Algeria , "this is another step forward" for the National Rally, according to political scientist Benjamin Morel, speaking on franceinfo on Thursday, October 30. This adoption of a text submitted by the National Rally is a first for the far-right party.
“Marine Le Pen [president of the National Rally group in the National Assembly] is right to say that this is a good step,” Benjamin Morel continued. “We have National Rally amendments that have already been voted on, but now we’re moving to the resolution stage. We’re a step further.” According to the political scientist, “it’s symbolic; it doesn’t mean there are major political upheavals, but it’s still important. It’s another step taken, but again, it’s just one step. This step is impressive, but we’re on a staircase,” he concluded.
On Thursday evening, during a press conference, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu addressed the 1968 Franco-Algerian agreement , stating that it needs to be "renegotiated because it belongs to another era, another period." Lecornu declared that he believes "the relationship between France and Algeria has long been a matter of domestic politics in Algeria," and that "renegotiating the agreement is worthwhile."
This agreement, signed six years after the end of the Algerian War, created a favorable immigration regime for Algerians, who did not need a specific visa to stay in mainland France for more than three months. They thus gained access to 10-year residency permits more quickly than other foreigners, including through family reunification.
